REGIONAL RATIONALE
Connection and access to people, services, and resources outside of Waioweka Pā are vitals aspects of maintaining a healthy sustainable community. This regional plan presents a big picture vision of how the Te Whakatōhea/ Ōpōtiki region could support a healthy connected iwi. This proposal envisions the 8 Te Whakatōhea marae as centers for urban development. Urban centers are connected through green corridors which simultaneously act as cycle trails and connect to existing cycle trails in the region. These trails will provide access to important landscape features, Whakatōhea commercial enterprises and the current town center; Opotiki. Green corridors increase ecological connectivity between coastal ecosystems and the regenerating native ecosystems in the Waioweka gorge.
