Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Hamid Bib Bugo, Doctor of Commerce honoris causa

Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haj i Hamid Bugo recently retired as State Secretary of the State Government of Sarawak.

Born in Kuching and educated at Encik Buyong School and St Thomas' School, Kuching, Hamid Bugo was awarded a Colombo Plan Scholarship in 1965. This brought him to New Zealand where he obtained a masters degree in economics from the University of Canterbury.

On returning to Sarawak, he embarked on what was to be a distinguished career in the public service of Sarawak.

In 1981 he became General Manager of the Land Custody and Development Authority and the following year was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Resource Planning.

In 1991 he became State Secretary of the State Government of Sarawak.

As head of the Sarawak Civil Service, Hamid Bugo actively promoted the conservation of wildlife in Sarawak, one of the world's most biologically diverse regions. This included facilitating the preparation and implementation of a master plan for wildlife management in the State. He was also instrumental in the establishment of a master plan for tourism development in Sarawak.

Hamid Bugo holds a number of directorships and has won numerous awards for his work.

Hamid Bugo' s honorary doctorate was conferred at a special convocation of Lincoln University in Kuching on 15 October last year, following the International Graduation Ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.
