Tekapo Township Proposal: A Place of Contrast - Matt Durning

Lake Tekapo is situated between Christchurch and Queenstown making Tekapo an important stopping point for tourists. Tekapo is located within an exceptional setting with expansive mountainous lake views which could be argued to be the most picturesque in the world. The township is contained by landforms on every side, consisting of lake Tekapo to the North, Mt John and smaller undulating hill landforms to the east south and west. These result in an amphitheatre like topography where the township sloes gently from the south down to the north to meet the lake edge. The surrounding landscape is an important factor that is driving development and tourism in the township. At present Tekapo township lacks a heart and with Tourism and development on the rise it is important to emphasize a central village that caters for community needs.
