Eric Raymond Hudson was born in Australia but came to New Zealand as a youngster. Attended Spreydon Primary School and Christchurch Technical College. Engaged in farming and other work in New Zealand and Australia after leaving school. Enlisted for service in World War I on 14th June 1915. Commissioned as 2nd lieutenant. Wounded in the Somme offensive, September 1916. Returned to New Zealand. Enrolled at Canterbury Agricultural College 1920. Took up teaching after graduation.In 1928 appointed Head of Field Extension Service in Tasmania. Appointed Director and Professor of Agriculture at Canterbury Agricultural College, New Zealand, in 1936. Guided the College through the lean years of World War II and the postwar years of expansion. Retired in 1952. Took up small holding at Harewood, Christchurch, and grew asparagus successfully. The award of the Bledisloe Medal was based on Professor Hudson's "outstanding work" in the directorship of CAC and his "long and able service to agriculture in various fields". Brother of Professor "Abe" Hudson of Massey University. Member of CAC 1st XV. Died June 1974 aged 80.
