11 July 1995 International Award To Lincoln Natural Resources Engineer

A long-established international award in the engineering field of hydraulics has been won by a Lincoln University staff member, Dr Sandy Elliott of the Department of Natural Resources Engineering.

Dr Elliott (pictured) is the winner of the 26th international Lorenz G. Straub Award for the Best Hydraulics Doctoral Thesis in the English language.

As winner of the Straub Award, Dr Elliott receives a silver medal, a cash prize and a trip to the University of Minnesota where he will present a special colloquium at the St Anthony Falls Hydraulic Laboratory.

Theses were submitted by universities offering advanced degrees in the United States, Canada, India, Australia and several European countries and these entries were judged by a panel of reviewers.

Under the terms of the award, papers based on the theses must also be written and submitted for publication before an award can be made.

Dr Elliott’s did his doctoral work at CalTech, where he studied the processes of solute transport in and out of streambeds, and the title of his post-thesis paper, “The Transfer of Solutes Into and Out of Streambeds” reflects this work.

Here at Lincoln Dr Elliott’s research interests include storm water quality, management and treatment, and he teaches papers in the area of environmental engineering.
