Design Vision: A unique place and experience of time. Awaroa will be a place where people experience time, the sublime, exposure, enclosure, and changes in weather and light. A place where events will occur remembering the past, celebrating the present, and creating the future. The site will provide heritage education, recreation opportunities, sculptural experiences, and year-round engagement for both domestic and international visitors.

Design Intent: At the masterplan level, the design resolves overall legibility, microclimate and connectivity issues. The design increases visitors’ accessibility to Awaroa providing an experience of the site which suits individual abilities and interests. This is achieved through a range of interconnecting loop walks which have a variety of points of interest along them including the sculpture network and education network, while effectively using the existing track network and linking with the heritage infrastructure of the site. At this scale there are three main infrastructure nodes. The day visitor carpark and picnic facilities, the central camping area, and the core heritage infrastructure
