6 October 1992 Expanding Need for Accommodation at Lincoln Prompts Levy Move at Lincoln University

The expanding need for student accommodation at Lincoln University has led to the adoption in principle of the imposition of a capital levy on student accommodation fees from next year onwards.

Pro-Chancellor Malcolm Cameron told this week's meeting of Lincoln University Council (Tues. 6 Oct.) that it was difficult to put objectives for student accommodation in concrete because circumstances were always open to change. However, Lincoln would like to be able to accommodate on campus 70-80 percent of its first year students who come from beyond the greater Christchurch area and up to 100 percent of its first year students from overseas.

The University is to construct an additional 24-bed unit for 1993 at an outside cost of $0.7 million. It recently sold flats it owned in Douglas Street, Lincoln, and the revenue from the sale will go back into campus accommodation.
