31 August 1992 New Scholarship to Lincoln for Maori Students

A new award – the Transpower Scholarship – has been established for male Maori students entering Lincoln University's Bachelor of Parks and Recreation Management course. It complements a scholarship already in place for female students.

The new Transpower Scholarship and the existing Princess Te Puea Scholarship are valuable stepping stones to university study for young Maori men and women, says Amanda Heath, Lincoln's Te Pou Hereke (Maori Community Relations Officer).

Ms Heath assisted the Hillary Commission's Maori Programme Manager, Waimarama Taumaunu, in negotiating sponsorship of the latest scholarship and she thanks Transpower and the Commission for their generous contribution to Maori education at Lincoln.

The new award, sponsored by Transpower in partnership with the Hillary Commission, is valued at $5000 a year for three years, the same amount and arrangement as for the Princess Te Puea Scholarship for female students, which is sponsored by the Maori Education Foundation also in partnership with the Hillary Commission.

Lincoln's Registrar, Allan Sargison, says the University welcomes the additional scholarship for Maori students to study in the Parks and Recreation Management area.

"It boosts Lincoln's stated ambition of raising the Maori presence among the student body.

"We know that the staff of both the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the Centre for Maori Studies will take the successful applicants under their wings.

"I would urge prospective students who meet the criteria to take up the challenge and apply."

Applications close on 4 December 1992.
