“Burns was my second home for 20+ years while studying and working at Lincoln University. I met many amazing people and learned a lot in this building. It may not have been pretty, but it had its own beauty.”

We love the interior shot of the stairwell! A unique image to have and a reminder to look up occasionally to see a different perspective!

The shot on the top right was a winner in the LTL 2022 Photography Competition. Of the image, judges said,

“I love brutalist architecture.  I love the bold lines and the interplay between abstract elements in the building contrasted with the path/grasses.

“This is a great shot that feels familiar without appearing stale, the lighting, leading lines, and framing are excellent and it captures a moment in time when Burns was isolated.” 

“This is a real moment in our living heritage that has been well composed, well-crafted and well rendered for all time. From me the path is our choice, which way will we go?”.

This collage was submitted to Living Heritage Tikaka Tuku Iho for the exhibition "Ode to an Icon: The Bold and Brutal of the Burns Building" to celebrate the building's history as it was demolished in 2024. The exhibition was curated by Library staff and held in Waimarie July/August 2024.
