Arthur's Pass: A Journey Through the Sublime

    Expand/collapse
    Collection2005 Major DesignDescription

    **View in Full Screen

The Collision of the Australian and pacific Plates is the fundamental force which creates the Southern Alps. The geological make-up of the transect ranges from flat alluvial food plains to rugged mountainous terrain and rocky coast line. The scars on the landscape display the geological forces at work. Elevated views within Arthur's Pass Village express the sublimity of the landscape.

The rich cultural layer within the Arthur's Pass landscape creates a further dimension in a tourism framework.

Arthurs Pass National Park was first gazetted as a national park in 1929. The village acts as an important hub for various recreational activities. Walking tracks starting in the village take people to features in the landscape and link them with the wider National Park.
