13 February 1997 Vice-Chancellor's portrait joins Lincoln University art collection

Lincoln University's art collection contains almost 200 original works by New Zealand artists covering a range of media and techniques – painting, print making, pottery and ceramics, sculpture, wood carving and weaving.

Memorial Hall houses the portraits of former heads of the institution including that of the foundation Manager-Director, William Edward Ivey (1838-1892).

Now the portrait of Lincoln's first Vice-Chancellor and head of the institution when it became a university in 1990, Professor Bruce Ross, joins the gallery.

Professor Ross left Lincoln in August last year to become New Zealand's Director-General of Agriculture, based in Wellington.

The painting, oil on linen, is by Joanna Braithwaite of Christchurch, who has two other works in the Lincoln collection (NZ Still Life No 3 and Red and Yellow Horses), and it was her first formally commissioned portrait.
