19 November 2015 School pupils ‘buzzing’ after IT day at Lincoln

A total of 150 Year 10 pupils from seven different secondary schools around Canterbury attended an IT training day at Lincoln University recently.

The second annual event, known as the ‘Include IT Day’, was hosted by Lincoln’s Department of Informatics and Enabling Technologies and included hands-on activities and demonstrations.

Pupils were able to experiment with sensors and robots, construct maps and 3D landscapes, and see the Lincoln University campus on the ground from a bird’s eye view. They also programmed virtual trampolines and made their own games.

“Lincoln is definitely the place to be as far as IT is concerned and the event involved teaching students about the extensive places information technology can take you,” says Dr Adrian Lowe, Lincoln University’s SchoolsLinc Outreach Coordinator.

The students came from Lincoln High School, Christchurch Boys’ High School, St Bede’s College, Darfield High School, Mairehau High School, Burnside High School and Roncalli College.

Ruth Davey, a TIC Digital Technologies teacher from Lincoln High School, says her pupils were “buzzing” when they returned to school.

“The highlight for most of them was robotics. Many of them wanted to know when we could do more robotics in class.”
