Former Lincoln students who served in the armed forces during World War II and subsequent conflicts will join past and present staff members and students at a special Anzac Day Service on the University campus on Wednesday.

Organised by Alumni Association Manager Rebecca Mcintosh, the service will be held in Memorial Hall, the University's official war memorial building. The service starts at 10am and will be conducted by the University's two chaplains, Canon Lois Warburton and Rev Fr Bernard Carney.

Memorial Hall is one of the few buildings on the Lincoln University campus not erected with State funds. It was built through an appeal among old students, friends of the institution and others, as a memorial to those who fought and died in World War I.

Inside, recorded on plaques, are the names of the over 200 students and former students who served in the conflict of 1914-18, and the more than 50 who died.

After the war of 1939-45 granite tablets were placed on the walls commemorating the service and sacrifice of students and staff in that conflict. The Governor-General of the time, Lord Freyberg unveiled these in 1949.

Above the tablets hangs a portrait of Lincoln's most distinguished serviceman-son, the late Captaiun Charles Upham VC & Bar.

Former Lincoln students from all over New Zealand and a number from abroad were back on campus last weekend (21-22 April) for a series of class reunions of various groups from the late 1950s and early 1960s plus 1981. The University's Alumni Association also held its AGM and annual dinner at which Bachelor of Agricultural Science graduate and former president of the association Brian Cameron of Pendarves, Mid-Canterbury, was named the Bledisloe Medal winner for 2001.
