Rationale: Wāhine Maori are inexpendible in te Ao Māori as te whare tangata (house of humanity) and are venerated for their ability to create life. Yet when compared to America, Canada and Australia, Aotearoa has the highest rate of imprisonment of indigenous women, and the majority of these wāhine are aged between 16-29 (PARS, 2020). The intergenerational transfer of social inequalities has normalised abuse and the prison pipeline for Maori and their whānau.
