Restoring Hauora: A Call to the Coast

VISION

The Paihia coastline will become an inclusive, harmonious, and prosperous landscape, to which Bay of Islands residents can turn to restore and uphold, personal, family and community well-being. The Paihia coastline will serve as a catalyst for landscape transformation throughout the wider Northland area, inspiring further health initiatives, to ensure all Northlanders have access to the resources required to live a healthy and fulfilling life.

GOAL

Restoring Hauora: A Call to the Coast, aims to improve the holistic well-being of those who reside within the Bay of Islands area, through enhancing local food security, strengthening community connections, and promoting stewardship over the land and sea.

OBJECTIVES

1. This project aims to commence with the establishment of an Iwi led community garden, in which matauranga Maori is embraced to grow nutritious and uncontaminated produce, in order to augment healthy food provision within the community.
2. This project aims to enhance connections within the landscape, through the establishment of a safe and accessible public transport option, as well as improvements to the existing walkway which spans the coastline.
3. Within the development of both the community garden and pedestrian network, this project aims to integrate a number of reflective spaces that allow for connection with nature and the wider world, as well as other people, in order to strengthen community cohesion.
4. Through marine habitat restoration and conservation, (as well as existing protective measures) this project aims to safeguard the traditions and cultural pastime of gathering kai moana from the coast.
5. The project aims to minimize and mitigate adverse impacts on the natural environment and to foster stewardship of indigenous ecosystems indefinitely.
