Design Intent: Quail Island will be transformed into an accessible and prominent multifunctional island which exhibits the idea of future heritage. Creating a resilient and sustainable island which responds to societies future needs. Quail Island will contribute towards the overall Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour Catchment Management Plan. These plans aim to create a healthy harbour to restore the ecological and cultural health in order for people to continue to practice Mahinga kai.

Quail Island will be known as an island with a story. The key monuments will become leading chapters in the unfolding narrative of the history and underlying roles of Quail Island.

Sub Goals:

To enhance the user's experience on Quail Island by promoting the rich historical and cultural values.

• To create a distinct link between existing heritage areas and to establish a coherent landscape outcome

• To create an inviting arrival experience which is memorable to users

To create opportunities broadening the user's awareness and understanding of the significant historical events on Quail Island

• To create a versatile space where people can gather to learn and engage with the dark history of the Island and specific sensitive heritage sites

• To design an interactive walkway unfolding the story of Quail Island

• To provide overnight stay for small groups to experience and explore more of Quail Island

To ensure Quail Island becomes a safe refuge for breeding of the tui species

• To connect the existing ecological patch and corridor networks within the Crater Rim to increase and enhance migration patterns.

• To create a safe habitat on the island for the tui species by increasing native forest and shrub areas.

• To ensure Quail Island sits within a resilient harbour by increasing the water quality which enters the harbour.
