In MemoriamIt is with much regret that we announce the death from wounds, of Pilot-Officer D. T. Herrick. While at College in 1932-33, Mr Herrick was an outstanding student. He was a member of the Executive and later President of the Students' Association. He was a keen supporter of all student activities and was a member of the 2nd XV and prominent in handicap athletics. Throughout his time at the College Mr Herrick was interested in this magazine; in his first year he was subeditor and in his final year, despite the heavy commitments of the Presidency, became the Editor. In his College work, Mr Herrick was outstanding, and received the Gold Medal for the Course. His ability was not confined to the lecture course as he was also runner-up for the farm marks. Leaving College, Mr Herrick went farming in Hawkes Bay. He enlisted in the Air Force early in the War, and while training at Taieri Aerodrome, received the George Medal for his gallant action in removing a pilot from a burning aeroplane with full knowledge that the burning plane contained live bombs. Mr Herrick then proceeded overseas and saw considerable service with the R.A.F. before being posted missing. A later message stated that Pilot Officer Herrick was a prisoner of war and wounded. This latest message states that he died from his wounds. Mr Herrick was a Life Member of our Association and it is with the utmost regret that we record this, our third fatality of the War. Mr Herrick is survived by his wife, Mrs D. T. Herrick of Dunedin. SourceCanterbury Agricultural College Magazine, November 1941, p96.Military RankPilot Officer
