1 March 1996 Another successful New Start programme...

Incoming students who attended Lincoln University's day-long New Start programme ahead of Registration and the start of lectures this year were well prepared for a smooth adjustment to university life thanks to the comprehensive nature of the programme they were guided through.

Close to 100 students from throughout the country attended New Start with the bulk of them being in the "mature student" category that is over 20 years of age.

Attendance was almost double that of last year and organiser Amanda Heath-Munn said that probably reflected the growing trend for adults to enrol in university courses for reasons of career change, upskilling, or personal development interest.

Sessions throughout the day covered fees, loans and allowances, taken by Margaret Wade-Wilson of Lincoln's Academic Section; the Library, hosted by Jicca Smith; the computer network, taken by Brenda Lord of the Centre for Computing and Biometrics; planning courses of study and working out timetables, taken by Caroline Steans of the Practical Work Unit and Lesley Williams of the Department of Economics and Marketing; and study techniques for university, led by Caitriona Cameron of the Student Learning Centre.

Lincoln University offers its New Start programme to in-coming students free of charge believing it is a beneficial service universities should offer.
