4 January 2002 Prepare for life of career changes says Lincoln head

Finding the best possible blend between what you would like to do career­-wise, where the most suitable opportunities are to prepare for that career and how to fit things in with your own personal aptitudes and strengths is not an easy task, says Lincoln University's Vice-Chancellor Dr Frank Wood.

"Furthermore, today's environment means you are likely to have a number of career changes or developments during your working life. You are also likely to have the opportunity to work in many different countries and most of you will continue to upgrade your skills formally and informally throughout your careers."

Dr Wood says the strategic challenges and opportunities facing countries and businesses around the world today require the ability to bring interdisciplinary capabilities together in value-adding models.

"The demand for appropriately skilled people to drive emerging opportunities is growing by the day," says Dr Wood, "and there is a message there for young men and women faced with deciding about future career pathways."

Lincoln University sees itself as having a key role to play nationally and internationally as countries and communities around the world face critical issues relating to food, nutrition, health, sustainability, energy, recreation and water.

"The scientific, commercial, social and resource implications of these issues are Lincoln University's business and the qualifications we offer reflect this," says Dr Wood.

"Education is a lifelong process and it is very likely that after completing an undergraduate qualification you will be back with us at some stage either adding a postgraduate degree, diploma or certificate, or taking up a professional development opportunity. We look forward to it."
