20 March 2002 Dairying scholarships for Lincoln students will support 'flourishing' industry

Eleven new New Zealand Dairy Industry Undergraduate Scholarships and five scholarship renewals for holders from last year will be presented to students at Lincoln University this Friday. (22 March)

The chairman of the board of dairy giant Fonterra, John Roadley, will make the presentations in the company of the CEO of Dexcel Ltd, the dairy industry's centre of excellence, Dr Rob Pringle.

"The Dairy Industry Undergraduate Scholarships, introduced last year, are a tangible expression of support for the flourishing dairy industry and a means of encouraging and supporting top calibre students who are keen on careers in dairying and associated areas," says Dr Pringle.

"The dairying industry needs an on-going input of graduates at all levels – on-farm production, research, product manufacturing and development, marketing and business management. Opportunities for graduates are expanding all the time."

The scholarships, equal to the value of course tuition fees, apply to bachelors degrees connected with dairying and they are tenable for up to four years.

The 11 new Dairy Industry Scholarship holders at Lincoln University and the degrees they are studying for are – Randall Aspinall (20) of Wanaka, B.Agr.Sc.(Hons); Morgan Easton (19) of Hakataramea, B.Agr.Sc.; Anita Hancock (20) of Christchurch, B.Sc.; Simon Lochhead (20) of Rakaia, B.Agr.Sc.; Alexandra O'Connell (19) of Timaru, B.Sc.; Brendan Richards ((18) of Richmond, B.Com.(Ag.); Anita Souness (20) of Te Anau, B.Sc.; Miriam Taylor (18) of Alexandra, B.Sc.; Karen Turnbull (18) of Kaikoura, B.Sc.; Mark Wells (18) of Oxford, B.Com.(Ag.); and John White (18) of Putaruru, B.Com.(Ag.).

The five continuing scholars from 2001 are – Amy Lucas (19) of Masterton, B.Com.(Ag.); Annabel Macartney (19) of Taitapu, B.Com.(Food Industry); John McPhail (19) of Gore, B.Agr.Sc.; Guy Metcalf (19) of Geraldine, B.Com.(Ag.); and Gregory Petersen (18) of Otaki, B.Com.(Ag.).

In addition to the 16 scholarships awarded at Lincoln University, 15 will also be presented at Massey University.
