A small recessed gable rises above the porch to mask the base of the bell tower. As befits its place in the central motif, it was designed to be the fanciest gable of them all, with spheres, pyramids, raised panels and circles making a veritable cadenza of shapes. Patterned slates cover the sides of the bell tower, which tapers to an ornate iron railing surrounding a wooden cupola that once housed the bell; and buttoned metal sheathing covers the quaintly shaped roof. Frederick Strouts's ultimate plan, however, was thwarted. On 29 July 1880, the School of Agriculture Committee decided that Mr Strouts be informed that there is no necessity for purchasing a clock", and to this day the circular medallion remains boarded up.(Burns 1977).
