The formal section of Ivey Hall's garden contained mostly roses and shrubs, except for an area (approximately 50 feet by 25 feet) planned as a parterre-garden. It had been set out when Ivey Hall was built, and the two seemed to complement each other, which is not surprising as the designs of both stemmed from Elizabethan times. The symmetrical shapes of the College's parterre were bordered with low box hedges. Each year dense groupings of small flowering plants, such as primroses, marigolds, dwarf phlox or anemones were grown, giving these shapes a mass of glowing colour reminiscent, indeed, of embroidery patterns. The small parterre was altogether charming and attracted many visitors-until, alas, it was destroyed. Some ten years ago, much to the consternation of those who treasured this garden as a living part of the history of the College, it was suddenly dug up, to be replaced by irregular paths and beds of ill-assorted shapes, possessing little artistic appeal and no historic interest. This drawing, made from memory, shows the parterre-garden and rose beds in 1945 with the back of the Lodge glimpsed beyond the macrocarpa hedge (Burns 1977).
