The Bell for the Homestead Building

DescriptionIn September 1879 the architect was directed "to procure a bell for the Homestead Building at a cost not exceeding £25". Over the years its sonorous tones punctuated the College day with regular commands: "arise!", "it's noon!", "come in from the fields, work has finished!". And often, in the distant countryside, busy farmers and their wives worked by its call. Less regularly, its tolling warned of fire or mourned the dead-a dreaded message during the war years when many students were serving overseas.

By 1956 the old bell's raison d'etre had diminished. Students no longer worked on College farms as practical work had been reorganised, and the bell hung silent, except for its use as a fire alarm or as the object of student pranks. After ninety years (1969) the ageing timbers of the cupola were showing the strain of the bell's great weight so it was removed. This sketch was made in 1973 in the College Buildings' Office where the bell was stored under a worktable-an intriguing bronze object among papers and maps. Its condition is sound, except for slight dents on its surface, and it measures 65 inches in circumference and 19 inches in height. No reference to its maker has been found (Burns 28).
