Site Description and Background: Mapua is a small coastal township located west of Nelson City on a 2km wide peninsula that forms the north-western side of one of the sea entrances to the Waimea Estuary. The Mapua area has been characterised by consistently high population growth over the last 10 years. Important features attracting residents to the Mapua are its climate, views, proximity to countryside and friendly neighbourhood.

Goals:

To recover and re-awaken the contaminated site after 30 years of being fenced off from the township and community.
To reconnect it to its surroundings and revitalise the surrounding area to create a new identity for Mapua as a world-class waterfront landscape without the negative perceptions associated with its past.
