Regional Context: Christchurch's city mall located within the Central City Zone of Christchurch, under the Christchurch City Plan. The area within the boundaries of City Mall in the major location for business, commercial and social activities for the City. Due to the raped growth of suburban shopping mall, City Mall's status as a premier shopping area (Christchurch City Council, City Mall Renovation Project Proposed Design, 2006) and vitality for the central city is being threatened. Despite its present statue, City Mall still plays a key feature within the central city as it is still exhibiting entertainments, cultural focus, leisure activities and is a major visitor’s attraction.

Design Program-Objectives: 

1.To improve city transport network.
2.To enhance The City Mall by integrating valuable social and communal spaces.
3.To develop the city business and commercial sectors (ratio of 4.36Ha open space to 1000 people).
4.To redeveloped under-utilized spaces and to create ideal setting for human-scale structures and parks.
5.To accommodate the increase in residential population from the current 8,000 to 30,000 (inner city). Within the four avenues by 2026, increase of 95 ha of open space.
