11 September 2008 Lincoln graduate's ability to 'slot in quickly' a key job-winning factor

Encouragement from an inspirational mentor, the self-confidence to chase his own star, and the backing of a solid academic qualification proved a job-winning formula for Lincoln University graduate Michael Aldwell of Christchurch.

Less than a year out from completing his Bachelor of Commerce and Management degree, Michael is a Project Manager (Contract Logistics) in Auckland with one of the world's leading logistics companies, Kuehne+Nagel Group. With over 52,000 employees in more than 830 locations in 100 countries, it's a giant enterprise and Michael is lapping up the opportunity to be associated with such a major player in his chosen field, logistics.

It all came about after logistics guru John Payne gave a guest lecture at Lincoln University and Michael had the opportunity to meet him.

"I spoke to him about what I would like to do and how to go about it and he was very helpful and encouraging."

"Kuehne+Nagel, is an excellent company to work for," says Michael. "I was expected to hit the ground running and 'slot in' from day one. As a result I was given a lot of autonomy and responsibility right from the start. Expectations are high but I believe I can match them given my Lincoln University training plus my natural enthusiasm for challenges.

"The ability to 'slot in' was the big factor and I think that Lincoln University produces graduates who are quickly able to do that."

At Lincoln University Michael did a rare triple major in his BCM degree - Supply Chain Management, Marketing, and Agribusiness - so he is well equipped across several disciplines to sit down and talk business with senior personnel from a range of industries. And that's all part of his job.

"I sit and talk with the likes of Fonterra and have to demonstrate that I know what I'm talking about. I love it. And it was Lincoln University that gave me the knowledge, confidence and grounding that helps me make sure I deliver the service my company's clients expect.

Michael came to Lincoln University as a 20-year-old after a "gap year" of work experience including working as a supermarket departmental manager.

"I started my Lincoln University career by taking some Summer School papers, found it was pretty good fun, so launched into the life of a fulltime student.

"I loved it from the start. There were heaps of great mates there and a great social life. With university you definitely get out of it what you put into it. For me it was a fun place to be. That's how I look back on it."

The former Lincoln High School student pupil who had been an age-group hockey representative for both Canterbury and Bay of Plenty looks back with gratitude on what Lincoln University gave him.

"I'm passionate about the place," he says. "And passionate too about the career opportunity with Kuehne+Nagel that it has opened up for me as a result ofmy degree."
