23 September 1985 Campus creche establishment investigated

Postgraduate students and staff at Lincoln College are hoping that a creche can be established on campus where their children can be looked after while they are studying or working, so they are carrying out a survey to determine how many have young children.

A working party investigating child care was set up in August and is aleady holding regular meetings.

Representatives from the Lincoln district, as well as from the campus, are in the working party

Working party spokesperson Hilary Collins said a site for the creche would have to be found, along with how initially funds could be raised and what people might have to pay to have their children looked after.

Ms Collins estimates that eventually 45 children could be cared for if a creche were established on the campus.

A community survey had been carried out to determine the need for a kindergarten in Lincoln village and this has now been opened, she said,

However, a kindergarten, with limited sessions and taking only children aged between three and five, did not fill the needs of those wanting a creche.

Those with children who would use the creche were either studying or working full time, Ms Collins said.

Among those who would like to see an on-campus creche are mothers working to support husbands doing postgraduate study, women who are themselves studying and working wives of staff.
