08 August 1985 Lincoln College Foundation Award recipients

Lincoln College Foundation Awards for study overseas have gone to a United Kingdom authority on apple breeding, two South Canterbury farmers planning to resurrect linen fibre production in New Zealand, a Rakaia farmer who wants to study developments in herbage seed production, and a soil scientist attending a North Atlantic Treat Organisation Advanced Study Institute course.

Dr Frank Alston, of the Pyrus and Prunus Breeding Station, East Malling Research Station in the United Kingdom, has an award to come to New Zealand to be a keynote speaker at next year's DSIR Plant Breeding Symposium.

He is a member of a research team that has produced the apple rootstocks, Malling 9 and Malling 106, on which the Canterbury industry will be based.

Dr Alston is also a pear breeder with valuable experience to pass on to both the New Zealand pear breeder and the pear industry.

Rakaia farmer Mr Allan Lill, winner of the quality award in ICI Wheat 84, is travelling overseas to look at chemical dwarfing in ryegrass, and production of varieties of clover

seed.

In the United Kingdom he will visit research institutions, and then go on to travel through Holland, Northern Germany and Denmark.

On his way back to New Zealand he will visit farmers in the United States, and Oregon State University.

Reader in Soil Science at Lincoln College Dr Alistair Campbell, is overseas attending a NATO Advanced Study Institute Course on Iron in Soils and Clay Minerals at Bad Windsheim, near Nurenburg, in West Germany.

Before attending the conference he spent time with research colleagues at the Soil Institute of the Munich Technical University, where he was visiting research worker from July 1982 to January 1983.

During his earlier visit there he was involved in developing a newly introduced differential X-ray diffraction technique for studying iron-oxide minerals in New Zealand soils.

One of his intentions while overseas is to improve his ability to apply the differential x-ray diffraction method.
