26 July 1985 Lincoln canopy system for growing grapes presented in the U.S.

American grape growers will learn how to use the Lincoln Canopy system for growing grapes from Lincoln College horticultural scientist Dr David Jackson who is going to the United States on Wednesday (July 31) next week.

Dr Jackson will speak at seminars for growers at two United States state universities : Washington, and the Corballis Campus at Oregon.

He will give two papers and take part in a panel discussion during a short course at Washington.

Scientists as well as growers will be on the course, which is held every two years.

One paper to be given by Dr Jackson is on the Lincoln Canopy system ; the other on factors affecting quality in wine grapes.

The panel will discuss pruning and training grapes for producing quality wines.

Factors affecting fruit set in grapes will be the topic of Dr Jackson's paper at Oregon State University.

The seminar at Oregon will be only for growers.

Dr Jackson said that at Oregon he would "join forces" with Mr Ken Brown, of Oregon State, who late last year and early this year spent some months at Lincoln College researching fruit set in grapes.

The Lincoln Canopy system, developed at Lincoln College for growing raspberries, has also proved satisfactory for growing grapes.

Advantages of the system are that the grapes can be mechanically harvested and pruned, and high yields are gained.

Grapes grow horizontally on a T-shaped trellis, rather than vertically on the conventional upright trellis.
