22 January 1985 Sixth Kellogg New Zealand Rural Leadership Course taking place

Six women the most yet have been chosen for the Kellogg New Zealand Rural Leadership Course at Lincoln College this year; 18 men have also been chosen for the course .

Next month they will begin their Kellogg year with an intensive 10-day program at Lincoln College.

Their course will take in communication skills, negotiating and bargaining, critical thinking and analysis, and decision making.

They will also get an understanding of how the New Zealand economy works, and an insight into political decision making.

During the 10-day program of the year-long course first phase they will hear leaders from farming and other sectors during 50 1 ½hour sessions.

In the second phase of the course they will work at home on projects of their own choosing.

In Phase Three those on the course return to Lincoln College to present their projects.

They will then go to Wellington for talks with heads of Government departments and major commercial organisations, the main pressure groups and others.

Average age of the 24 on the course is 36 one year higher than last year with the youngest 25 and the oldest 44.

Nine dairy farmers and eight from sheep-beef farms are the biggest groups on the course.

Two are from agricultural businesses and two from sheep-cropping farms, while there is one from a beef-goat farm, one from a sheep farm and one from agricultural servicing.

Fifteen are from the North Island and nine from the South Island, with five coming from Canterbury.

They pay no tuition fees, and pay only for transport to and from Lincoln College and for their accommodation whilst they are there.
