6 Jan 1986 Travel study awards given out by Lincoln College Foundation

Four New Zealanders, two Australians, an American and a Swiss-New Zealander have been awarded travel study awards by the Lincoln College Foundation.

One New Zealander plans to go with a delegation of senior scientists to Japan, another to give a paper at a conference in Poland, while the other two will visit research establishments in Britain and Europe. 

One Australian will come here to collaborate in research on ammonia loss from fertilizer through volatilisation ; the other to talk on goat breeding and research.

The American will come to New Zealand to study and talk about the onset of puberty in female sheep reproduction.

Research on outdoor table grapes, markets for organically-grown New Zealand produce, production and management of fodder and nut trees, and coppicing is planned by the Swiss-New Zealander.

Dr Ian Forrester, senior lecturer in biochemistry at the University of Otago, will join a DSIR biotechnology delegation of senior scientists visiting Japan in April.

He will also go to Seoul in Korea to discuss the supply of trypsin an enzyme from sheep and lamb pancreas.

In the last two-three years Dr Forrester has established a biotechnological process for extracting and refining trypsin for industrial and pharmaceutical applications.

Lincoln College animal science lecturer Mr Terence Hughes, who will be in Scotland on sabbatical leave this year, will use his award to visit dairy and pig grazing and management research establishments in England, Ireland, Holland and France.

He will study computerized data-collection systems, and go to an animal production conference at Budapest in Hungary.

Consultant landscape architect Ms Diane Lucas, of Geraldine, will use her award to go to Poland for the International Federation of Landscape Architects Conference.

Ms Lucas, who lectured in landscape architecture at Lincoln College in 1984, will present a paper on rural landscape shaping at the conference.

She also intends visiting Britain, France, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and Germany during three months in Europe to study integrating agricultural, horticultural, forestry and recreational land use.

Dr David Scott, of the DSIR Grasslands Division at Lincoln, will work at the Royal Botanic Garden at Edinburgh, in Scotland, during the northern hemisphere spring, summer and autumn.

He will investigate a rust fungus that could be used to control mouse-ear hawkweed in the South Island high country.

His concern is to find a control agent for hawkweed on high country land that is not suitable for economic development.

An internationally-recognised soil scientist Dr John Freney, of the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry at Canberra, the Australian national capital, will spend four weeks in New Zealand later this year.

He will work with Lincoln College scientists and technicians to demonstrate a simple method for routine assessment of ammonia loss from broadcast urea fertilizer.

Dr Freney will also talk with college staff on studies in organic sulphur mineralization.

Dr Barrie Restall, a senior research scientist with the State Department of Agriculture located with the CSIRO Division of Animal Production at Prospect in New South Wales, will spend two weeks in New Zealand in February.

He has been invited to New Zealand to talk with farming, scientific and administrative organisations in goat breeding.

He will help group-breeding schemes formulate breeding strategies for producing cashmere and goat meat, exchange information and advise on research, talk about goat industry planning, and gain knowledge of the goat industry here.
