14 Jan 1986 Accommodation sought for Lincoln College students

About 100 students taking courses at Lincoln college this year and who have not found accommodation in the college halls of residence are looking for rooms, flats or share houses in the Lincoln district, or in the central city or western and southern suburbs of Christchurch.

Among the 100 students are those who are looking for board with families.

Some are first-year students, away from home for the first time, while others are returning to the college for their second or third years.

Seeking the accommodation for the students is Lincoln College accommodation officer John Cole.

Those who have accommodation for students can get in touch with Mr Cole by calling him on 252-020.

Mr Cole, who was a student at Christchurch Teachers College last year, said he was well aware of the need for students to be able to get reasonable, low-priced accommodation.

"Students are usually on fixed incomes throughout the year, and can not easily meet increases in rents during the year," he said.

"Lincoln College students living in Christchurch have higher fares to pay than those at tertiary institutions in the city."

Mr Cole said his task was as liaison between students and those with accommodation to offer.

"While I am here to help students find somewhere to live, I am also concerned that the needs of landlords are met.

"Some landlords are wary of taking students because they have had a bad experience previously, but I can point out to them not all students should be judged on the poor behaviour of a few."

Mr Cole said the students started their year from beginning of March, so they would want to move in from about the middle of February.

Private board costs from $60 to $70-plus, while this year living in a college hall of residence will cost $80· a week.

Mr Cole, who is 30, spent last year at Christchurch Teachers College, after working in Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

He graduated from the University of Wales as Bachelor of Arts with honours in 1979.

Born in Takapuna, Mr Cole went to Britain with his parents in 1957.
