Matarehua “Monty” Wikiriwhi enrolled at Lincoln College in 1946 and received the Diploma of Valuation and Farm Management in 1949. He subsequently worked for the Māori Affairs Dept as a Farm Supervisor.
Captain Wikiriwhi lead New Zealand’s 28 (Māori) Battalion 'B' Company in battles at Monte Cassino, Italy, during the Second World War. Monty was severely wounded and awarded the Military Cross for his bravery and gallantry
