    About

Desmond Bernard (Des) McSweeney (M.A., Dip.Ag.(C.A.C.)) – helped Lincoln into modern era

Lincoln University paid homage recently to a pioneering figure in the modern era of its history, Des McSweeney, who died in Christchurch on 8 March aged 92. Des was the foundation Director of the Rural Development and Extension Centre (RDEC) when it was established in 1976 specifically to boost outward engagement by the then Lincoln College with the rural community.

A Lincoln alumnus (DipAgr 1947-48), Des joined the staff in 1960 as a specialist Lecturer in Rural Education. The later creation of RDEC and his appointment as Director brought him into a variety of areas additional to the Centre’s main mission, including schools liaison, public relations, and international student counselling. He was energetic and popular, and became one of Lincoln College’s well-known public faces. Des retired in 1976 and remained a loyal former staff member and alumnus.
