Destination Waipara - Nic Kay

Waipara Valley sits 45 minutes from Christchurch and an international airport. It is the fastest growing wine region in New Zealand with 26 Wineries and quickly becoming renowned for its produce including great wine but also a variety of nuts and olive growers call Waipara home. There is also an abundance of activities and stops on the drive from Christchurch to Waipara including four golf courses an adrenaline forest and countless cafes as well as well-known restaurants/wineries such as Pegasus Bay and Mudhouse Estate.

Vision: To develop a tourist and recreation hub that is physically and spiritually connected to place, rich in experience, atmosphere and character unique to Waipara Valley.

Key Drivers: • Experience - Provide a rich and engaging experience through Landscape character and existing landscape experiences in the valley such as the Wineries play on landform, architecture and views. • Connectivity - Connect the development to place through links to historical anchors and to place through detailed design using wine and farming themes. As well as connecting the golf course and its facilities to the surrounding community and ecological processes. • Functionality - Create a highly functional circulation hub with logical circulation patterns that Brings people together but limits conflict. • Atmosphere / Interaction - Develop presence within the landscape and community with a unique experience and range of activities happening in one place with a variety of people forming a unique rich atmosphere that is busy and special to Waipara Valley.
