27 April 2009 Schools ready to take up KiwiSport Challenge

Sport Canterbury's 2009 KiwiSport Challenge starts this Wednesday (29 April) at Windsor Primary School, Burwood, and events will follow at over 20 primary schools in Christchurch and surrounding areas throughout May, with several thousand pupils in total taking part.

KiwiSport Challenge is an initiative of Sport Canterbury and is designed to encourage non-competitive outdoor fun and enjoyment through modified sporting activity among 5 to 13-year-olds.

The participating schools all have a chance to win a sporting goods prize package from Sport Canterbury, through attracting the greatest amount of community support in terms of spectator attendance. Parents, caregivers, family members and friends are all encouraged to support the KiwiSport Challenge days at their respective schools.

As in past years, Lincoln University Bachelor of Recreation Management students from the degree's Event Planning course are helping Sport Canterbury with the KiwiSport Challenge.

The Lincoln University students are assisting with the Challenge at 14 of the participating schools. They are helping with everything from coaching to marketing and publicity and they will be attending the events at the schools for which they are responsible.

“Lincoln University enjoys a good relationship with Sport Canterbury and the KiwiSport Challenge, built up over the years,” says Senior Lecturer David Lamb. “The students' learning really benefits from assisting with a 'live', high profile event such as this. We hope in turn that we are contributing constructively to Sport Canterbury's work in the area of fitness, the enjoyment of sport and community well-being.”
