28 January 2009 Lincoln University sees Young Farmer Contest sponsorship as 'investment in future of farming'

Lincoln University is an enthusiastic supporter of the National Bank Young Farmer Contest.

"We support the contest in a variety of ways and for a number of reasons," says Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Chris Kirk.

"Sponsoring prizes, providing scholarships, assisting with judging and adjudication, hosting a Regional Final (in 2006) helping generate publicity - these are all ways in which Lincoln University provides assistance.

"Lincoln University supports the Young Farmer Contest because, first of all, it is a nationally recognised showcase for fanning, which is New Zealand's most important single business.

"Given the central role of fanning in the New Zealand economy, and its importance supporting the way of life we enjoy in this country, it's perfectly appropriate that a land-based university like Lincoln should help celebrate the skills and knowledge associated with agriculture. All New Zealand should!

"Secondly, as a land-based university with a heritage in agricultural education stretching back almost 130 years, Lincoln is always interested in the success of its graduates. We have been delighted to see them among the winners and place-getters at all levels of the contest year after year. It is a particular pleasure to note that past Lincoln University students have won 19 of the Grand Finals since the start of the event in 1969.

"Thirdly, we believe that any contest which draws so much support from rural suppliers businesses, companies and families and pours so much back into the industry through the encouragement and promotion of fanning skills and knowledge, deserves our support too.

"We see our support as a worthy investment in the future of fanning in New Zealand, which ultimately benefits all New Zealanders."

"Year after year, in District and Regional events, the contest presents to New Zealand audiences line-ups of outstanding young men and women who are wholly dedicated to their fanning or associated activities.

"Then in the Grand Finals, the best of the best demonstrate just why New Zealanders are among the world's leading farmers. That deserves celebrating," says Dr Kirk.
