Study may just be starting for 2021, but our Future Leader Scholars are already hard at work on a community project in the Christchurch Red Zone.
They have been working alongside volunteers from the Richmond Community Garden to prepare a site for a mushroom-themed education, play and foraging garden called the Mushroom Room.
Set to spring up in the in the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor Regeneration Area in the coming months, the garden will feature at least six different native and exotic species of edible mushrooms for foragers.
There will also be up to five large art installations by local artists, four engaging nature play pieces, and interactive signage to educate people about the fast-growing fungi.
Forty-seven Future Leaders were weeding, mulching, fencing, pruning and preparing material to compost at the site, as part of the new scholars’ annual scholarship orientation.
This initiative was started by the 2020 Future Leaders to include the new scholars into the culture of the programme right from the start of the year, which involves community service towards social and/or environmental benefit.
