21 June 1984 Dr Anthony Carleton Zwart appointed Professor of Marketing at Lincoln College

Dr Anthony Carleton Zwart has been appointed Professor of Marketing at Lincoln College ; he was born in Christchurch and got his first degree at the college.

Thirty-five-year-old Dr Zwart was at Lincoln College from 1967 until 19701 and graduated Bachelor of Agricultural Science.

He then became a farm adviser with MAF, working for 12 months on extension and survey work in the West Coast and Raglan regions.

Dr Zwart studied at Guelph University in Canada and graduated from there with a Master of Science degree, and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

While at Guelph he also worked as a research assistant and research associate, and did some teaching.

He also carried out marketing research and consultation with Ontario pork producers.

While writing his Ph.D. dissertation from 1975 until 1977 Dr Zwart worked full time as a research economist with Agriculture – the Canadian counterpart of MAF.

He had responsibility for developing research on international wheat agreements and buffer stock policies for the Canadian Government.

Dr Zwart returned to Lincoln College in 1977 as a post-doctoral fellow and continued research on international wheat trade and the local wheat industry.

He was appointed lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Lincoln College in 1978, and later became senior lecturer.

During his time at Lincoln College he has taught mathematics and statistics in economic methodology, microeconomics and marketing in agricultural economics and advanced marketing.

He has also taught advanced marketing research at masterate level.

Dr Zwart gained two North American Masterate Thesis awards in 1973 ; one from the American Agricultural Economics Association, and the other from the Canadian Agricultural Economics Association.

He was also awarded a Japan Foundation Research Fellowship in 1980.

Dr Zwart has been an executive member of the Agricultural-Horticultural Science Board of Studies at the college since 1978, and has been course adviser for Agricultural Economics II for five years.

He is a member of the Australian, American and Canadian Agricultural Economics Societies.

He is president of the New Zealand branch of the Australian Agricultural Economics Society, and a member of the N.Z. Institute of Agricultural Science.

Dr Zwart is also a member of the editorial committee of the Australian Journal of Agricultural Economics.

He has also published extensively, in American, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand journals, as well as in conference papers.

Dr Zwart has written research reports and discussion papers for the Agricultural Economics Research Unit at Lincoln

College on a wide range of issues, Much of his writing has been concerned with research into problem-based local issues, and his most recent interest was research into meat industry marketing institutions.

Dr Zwart has a wife, Elizabeth, and three children, Rosemary (8), Sara (6)_, and Katherine (18 months).
