10 August 1984 Professor Anthony Clement appointed as Professor of Agricultural Economics

Professor Anthony Clement Rayner, who has been Professor of Economics at the University of Canterbury for the last 12 years, has been appointed Professor of Agricultural Economics at Lincoln College.

Forty-six-year-old Professor Rayner, who is married and has two children, studied at the University of Birmingham, in England, from 1957 until 1961.

He was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce degree with first class honours in 1960, and a Master of Social Science degree, in economics and econometrics, in 1961.

Professor Rayner was visiting instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the United States, from 1961 until 1962, as a Fulbright Scholar.

The following year he went to Oxford as a Research Fellow at Nuffield College until 1963 .

Professor Rayner was visiting lecturer at the University of Tokyo from 1963 until 1966.

Later in 1966 he took up an appointment as senior lecturer in the Economics Department of the University of Canterbury.

He became Reader in 1969, and was appointed Professor in 1972 .

Professor Rayner has been the University of Canterbury representative ort Lincoln College Professorial Board since 1981.

He was national president of the Association of University Teachers from mid- 1981 until mid-1983, apart from a short break.

During the last three years Professor Rayner has been involved in health economics in research into primary and secondary care, costing alcohol abuse, and the cost of providing care for the dependent elderly.

Last year he was involved in a workshop on health economics and health services organisation.

At the 1981 A.U.T. conference on the Universities into the 21st Century he dealt with the economics of universities.

Since 1966 Professor Rayner has produced many academic publications, including papers on the New Zealand sheep industry, and the wool price and the production of synthetics.

Also, he supervised the first three doctorates to be awarded by the Economics Department at Canterbury.

His research has taken in several areas of applied economics, including financial markets, agricultural economics, development economics and regional economics .
