20 May 2013 Lincoln University retain Hart O’Reilly trophy

On Saturday 18 May University rugby rivalry featured in the Christchurch Metro competition when Lincoln University played Canterbury University, at Ilam Fields, in their annual match for the Hart O’Reilly Trophy.

Lincoln University retained the Hart O’Reilly trophy by beating University of Canterbury 50 to 22.

The Hart O’Reilly Trophy, in the form of a carved wooden rugby ball, was introduced in 2006 and it commemorates two famous university coaches – the late Denis ‘Joe’ Hart of Lincoln University and the late Laurie O’Reilly of Canterbury University (later to be New Zealand’s Commissioner for Children).

The Lincoln University Division 2, Premier Colts and Colt teams also played their matches against University of Canterbury rugby teams.  All three Lincoln University teams won their games.  The Division 2 team won 62 to 0, Premier Colts team won 27 to 12 and the Colts team won 27 to 5.
