Akaroa is a small French town in Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South island of New Zealand situated within a habour. Akaroa is simply translating into long harbour- Whangaroa. The water has been an important factor and resource for both the residents and visitors. As well as the landscape having interesting flora and fauna the land is also used for agriculture, vineyards and orchards and of course for recreation and leisure too. French Bay is the most populated bay and the most well-known too. There are eight French bays which share a variety of similarities as well as differences too each area known for its specialty whether it is wine or cheese they create an experience. The eight towns also all combine and interlock to make up the bigger picture as well as of course make an enjoyable landscape too.

The character of Akaroa is of a French town which is full of character. This character is made up of both man-made introduced characteristics as well of course natural characteristics too. The French Bay is where my MD project is based and will be referred to as Akaroa throughout the project. The natural characters are of course the blue and green scapes which surround and intersect the town as well as the craggy volcanic hills which frame the petite and pretty town. The vegetation already welcomes people to come closer and to learn and explore what the hills and surrounding vegetation have to offer. These natural elements are framed by man-made features and allow individuals to experience the landscape safely.

Design Intent: To create an innovative akaroa through the idea of awareness and environmental education of the blue systems which have sculpt and shape akaroa. This will be achieved through interesting hard and softscapes. This created landscape shall enhance the beautiful natural character of the site and create a natural experience which is both functional and enjoyable for both the masses of tourists and small permanent population of residents. The blue environmental education hub will reconnect the sea and settlement. The design shall incorporate aspects of landscape architecture, ecology and sociology to encourage stronger connections with the people and the landscapes once again.

    Goals:
    ENVIRONMENTAL

    • To create interesting and innovative designed and enhanced green and blue landscapes.
    • To emphasize and enhance the natural landscape and character through the use of native biodiversity- plantings in keeping with vegetation from Banks Peninsula.

    TOURIST & RESIDENTS

    • To provide education about blue systems in Akaroa and the surrounding area.
    • To increase activity and encouraging people to not use it as not just an landing place but enjoying what Akaroa has to offer.

    TOWNSHIP

    • To enhance the connectivity between both ends of Akaroa.
    • To encourage walkability and promote a more pedestrain friendly hub.
