9 July 2012 Australian students win a trip that may just change their lives

Five students from Australia have won the opportunity to visit New Zealand’s specialist land-based university to see first-hand what a Lincoln University degree can give them.

Lincoln University runs an annual ‘Land the Trip’ competition to provide secondary students from key Australian schools the chance to experience Lincoln University first-hand.   Students in the targeted schools are asked to write 500 words about why they should be chosen to visit the specialist university. 

This year three boys and two girls – from schools in Tasmania, Melbourne, Adelaide and Hamilton (Victoria) – have been selected to travel to New Zealand.  They will be hosted by the Lincoln University staff and current Future Leaders scholars. 

The aim is two-fold:  being able to see and experience Lincoln University for themselves will reinforce the messages their school Careers Advisors and the University’s recruitment team have given them about a specialist land-based education; and in turn the University hopes to establish new student ambassadors within the key schools and attract top-class students to Lincoln.

The students – Dianna Branson, Jackson Koster, James Campkin-Smith, Alec Ross and Sally Terry - arrived in Christchurch on Sunday 8 July and will be hosted on campus in student accommodation in the New Zealand Cricket pavilion. 

A full two-day programme will highlight a number of the specialist land-based programmes offered at Lincoln University and allow the students to experience how it feels to be a Lincoln University student.  The programme will allow students to tour the facilities, hear from lecturers and engage with current students.
