22 May 2012 Rugby and ‘shave to save’ all part of a busy weekend on campus

On Saturday 19 May University rugby rivalry featured in the Christchurch Metro competition with Lincoln University playing Canterbury University in their annual match for the Hart O’Reilly Trophy.

Lincoln University won the match, 21 to 10, taking back the Hart O’Reilly Trophy, which the University of Canterbury has held for the past two years.

The Hart O’Reilly Trophy, in the form of a carved wooden rugby ball, was introduced in 2006 and it commemorates two famous university coaches – the late Denis ‘Joe’ Hart of Lincoln University and the late Laurie O’Reilly of Canterbury University (later to be New Zealand’s Commissioner for Children).

The Lincoln University Division 2, Premier Colts and Under 20 Colt teams also played their matches at home against University of Canterbury rugby teams.  All three Lincoln University teams won their games.  The Division 2 team won 31 to 16, Premier Colts team won 22 to 16 and the Under 20 Colts team won 18 to 10.

Then on Sunday 20 May the Lincoln University Future Leaders scholars were busy raising funds for their ‘Lend a Hand’ worthy recipient, the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, managing to raise an amazing $22,000.

From 12.00noon to 2.00pm the campus was open to the community and joining them and University staff and students were Richie McCaw, Robbie Fruean, Michael Hobbs and Anthony Boric.

During the two hours 26 brave people shaved their heads for the cause.  While the shaving was going on there were plenty of games, activities and prizes for the kids.
