15 June 2012 Landscape architecture students’ winning designs selected for a ‘tranquil’ Christchurch

Lincoln University’s second-year landscape architecture students have teamed up with Healthy Christchurch and Christchurch’s Māori, Pacific and ethnic communities to create six serene gardens - Places of Tranquillity – at demolition sites across Christchurch.

The six themes for the serene gardens are Africa, Europe and Russia, Latin America, North and West Asia, Pacific and South and East Asia.

The students individually came up with 40 design concepts based on one of themes and these were presented to the community.  The design concepts were put on display and the community had an opportunity to view and vote on the design they preferred for each of the six sites.

The six winning designs, announced at the Healthy Christchurch Hui on Thursday 31 May, are:

• Africa - Todd Graham
• Europe and Russia - Jess Rae
• Latin America - Megan Walker
• North and West Asia - Nicki Williams
• Pacific - Gerrard Thomson
• South and East Asia - Carolyn Ramsbottom

The winning students will now work with local landscape architects to finalise their design concepts, and then all the landscape architecture students will work with Greening the Rubble and several ethnic minority communities to construct the six gardens on temporary sites in Christchurch.
