Douglas Graham Macfarlane (1905-07)
Mr D. G. Macfarlane, a well-known North Canterbury farmer, died at his home, "Rafa Downs," Hundalee, on May 14th, 1962, at the age of 75.
Mr Macfarlane was a son of John Macfarlane, of "Hawkswood" station, and was educated by private tutor and at a Scottish boarding school at Rangiora, which subsequently became the Rangiora High School.
At Lincoln College he was one of a group of students all of whom became prominent in diverse fields in later life. Among his contemporaries were G. E. T. Shand, Major-General J. I. Chrystall, S. C. Harris, G. W. R. Osborne, and E. J. Jekyll.
D. G. Macfarlane was a member of the 1st XV and the 1st XI, being captain of cricket in 1906-07.
Mr Macfarlane served with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles in Egypt and Palestine during World War I, and after the war took up a section of the Hawkswood estate, which he named "Rafa Downs." during this period he broke in a good deal of rough country.
Mr Macfarlane is survived by his wife and a daughter.
