About
Denis Chapman of "The Ranche", West Eyreton, North Canterbury, died on December 21st, 1937. Mr Chapman, who was 48 years old, was a student at the College during 1907-08. He was an exceedingly able and popular student who took a keen interest in all activities. During 1907-08 he was a member of the 1st XV and in 1908 was Captain of the 2nd XI.
In 1916 he took over his father's property and in recent years his farm has been looked upon as a model in North Canterbury, He was an outstanding and successful breeder and exhibitor of sheep.
In 1911 he was a member of a contingent of the Canterbury Yoemanry Cavalry which formed an escort at the Coronation of the late King George V. in London.
The late Mr. Chapman was a steward of the North Canterbury Racing Club and was very well known as Master of the Brackenfield Hunt. He was a keen polo player in his earlier years and was very successful in this sport. He was a former President of the North Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association and was also a member of the Eyre County Council. He was a Life Member of the Old Students' Association.
Mr Chapman is survived by his wife and two daughters.
