Second-Lieutenant J. R. Upton who was at Canterbury Agricultural College 1927-29 was killed in action on 26 November 1941. Second-Lieutenant Upton, who was a son of Mr T. E. Upton, was born at Allenton, Ashburton in 1907. He was educated at the Allenton School, the Ashburton High School, and also took a course of instruction at the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. He was engaged in farming until the outbreak of war, when he enlisted and went overseas with the 1st Echelon. Second-Lieutenant Upton was in an officers' training school during the campaigns in Greece and Crete. Second-Lieutenant Upton visited Canada about 12 years ago to study agricultural methods there.
