1948 Bledisloe Medal was posthumously awarded to Roy Andrew Calder, Late Director, Agronomy Division, Lincoln. Roy Andrew Calder received his secondary education at Timaru Boys' High School and at Lincoln 1922-23. He was an enthusiastic player of rugby, cricket, and tennis, and in due course gained his B.Agr.Sc. and B.Sc. He subsequently joined the Department of Agriculture, which he left to go overseas for further study. On his return he went to the Plant Research Station, later being transferred to the Agronomy Division at Lincoln, of which he was the Director at the time of his death.
The extent of his work and an appreciation of his sterling qualities is on record in the obituary notice in the 1948 magazine.
In 1937 he married Betty Collyns, of Palmerston North, and Mrs. Calder and her four young children were living at Lincoln. He died suddenly on May 31st in the prime of life at the age of 44.
