    Goerge Kerr McPherson (1926-27)

     

    Retirement from Department of Agriculture 1965

    Mr G. K. McPherson (1926-27) Fields Superintendent, Dunedin. Mr McPherson was appointed an Assistant Instructor in Agiculture at Ruakura in 1928, After completing his course at Lincoln. he present research area was then a farm of instruction for youths, and Mr McPherson took over as housemaster in 1929 from Mr A. Stuart, who retired in 1964 from the position of Fields Superintendent, Department of Agriculture, Palmerston North.

    In 1934 Mr McPherson was transferred to Christchurch as Instructor in Agriculture, and some months later to Ashburton. In the ensuing 24 years he became very well known to Mid Canterbury farmers, particularly for his work on irrigation. During the Second World War he helped to pioneer the growing of linen flax for fibre, which was urgently needed for British industries after European supplies were cut off.

    In 1949 Mr McPhersonwas appointed Irrigation Research Officer at Winchmore Research Station and later Superintendent. He visited Austraia in 1954 to study irrigation practices and experimental work. 

    Mr McPherson became Fields Superintendent at Dunedin in 1959.
